ECLs the board must investigate in the event that they ought to adjust or acclimatize the way of life, they expected to find that they have to build up a solid administration intend to draw in, create and hold pioneers inside the organization. One of the key issues for ECL is figuring out how to adequately coordinate directors from an alternate culture. As indicated by Lewiki individuals from various societies seem to haggle in an unexpected way. Hence social relations are likewise essential to be set up. This specific issue came up when ostracize directors gave input to Chinese workers who considered the to be as a pundit to their way of life. Maybe ECL the executives should concentrate on making assignments that will add to building associations with ECL China partners. It is realized that that overseeing individual connections is basic for compromise. Lewiki makes reference to that as indicated by Phatak and Habib the relations created among the chief arranging parties before the genuine dealings will likewise impor tantly affect the arrangement procedure and result. An individual connection was seen by the Chinese as it could advance a progressively open flank and correspondence among administrators and their subordinates and partners. The business style introduced inside ECL is shown as exile administrators anticipate that partners should be progressively proactive. The powerful direction inside ECL China is by all accounts repudiated by the Chinese staff style to discover easy routes to take care of issues. ECL the executives has made frameworks to anticipate the correct strides to tackling issues to a given circumstance. In any case, numerous Chinese staff thought the frameworks turned out badly and deferred the dynamic procedure. Chinese staff experienced issues tolerating that many ostracize administrators don't have a similar degree of specialized skill that is anticipated from the staff. Further, ostracizes were regularly seen as not completely dedicated to China and would consign dynamic duty to the home office. This would regularly cause a postponement in efficiency. Notwithstanding, China has an extremely gainful and the instructing program that was created to match Chinese staff with experienced ostracizes was actualized to make a proper component to move information and social data. This brought down the degree of hostility developing towards ECL the executives; it was a superior choice for ECL to elevate ostracize supervisors to China with a significant level of specialized experience who are capable of settling on choices in a short measure of time. An extra test that ECL had was drawing in and keeping nearby ability. ECL needed to supplant exiles in a brief period time however they are making some troublesome memories employing skilled Chinese administrators. The interest for capable staff was developing and progressively gifted work force were required. A basic issue experienced was the migration blocking achievement is that numerous capable potential recruits leave the nation. Those that remain get attractive remuneration bundles from Chinese claimed firms. A ton of decidedly ready work force were showing signs of improvement offers; ECL additionally needs to vie for the rest of the people among different firms that are starting to enter the Chinese market. ECL must recollect when searching out ability that regard for older folks assumes a critical job in high force direction nations and youthful supervisors may not get the regard or bolster that they should be viable. An extra issue was the opposition included by China entering the World Trade Organization. This made a great deal of financial specialists China and begin contributing makes a domain of serious rivalry. Maybe, ECL could utilize current workers to select more youthful relatives that can be prepared inside the nation. G ECL must acclimatize their administration rehearses into Chinese culture. Notwithstanding how hard ECL attempts to influence workers into the ECL culture, their future ability pool will be produced from the Chinese culture. Hence is significant for the administration to decide how the social issues might be looked inside ECL. The Chinese work power will be a key factor to ECL achievement. The organization needs to get increasingly associated with to how to deal with an immediate discourse and totally adjust to the Chinese culture so as to win their trust regard and be effective. Another answer for the companys enrolling exertion is select relatives and man of the hour them into the ECL culture. Lastly, the ECL can proceed with the preparation from ECL University which will exhibit the ECL culture while acquainting it to ECL China. Synopsis of Issues The Chinese culture shows a huge level of community The Chinese societies have bunch situated vision. Ostracizes neglected to build up the relations that are requirements for making an amicable and deferential workplace that would permit the social joining. The move to be made by ECL is that administration should concentrate on making undertakings that will add to building associations with ECL China. Ostracize supervisors anticipate that partners should be increasingly proactive-ECL ought to receive a progressively adaptable critical thinking structure that urges Chinese staff to be progressively proactive while considering the issues of the compromise procedure. Ostracize administrators need results and Chinese staff needs to manufacture connections to get to the outcomes. Chinese staff needs to build up a trust based relationship preceding executing an agreement while the US approach is to settle subtleties and explain. ECL supervisor ought to recognize that the Chinese hard working attitudes corresponds legitimately to the Chinese national culture and in this way should be grasped inside ECL rehearses. Ostracize directors gave input to Chinese representatives who saw the criticism to be an immediate analysis. The executives need to exchange and standard gatherings and energize the discourse. Ostracizes didn't get the full regard from their staff. For the Chinese staff was hard tolerating that exiles since they were seen as not completely dedicated to China since they would consign choice obligation the organization and that they didn't have a similar degree of aptitude. The training program was created to match Chinese staff with experienced ostracizes was executed to make a conventional system to move information and culture. An answer could to elevate ostracize directors to the China with a significant level of specialized experience who are open to settling on basic choices in a short measure of time. ECL is experiencing difficulty pulling in and making sure about nearby ability. The issues hindering achievement are that numerous skilled potential acquisitions leave the nation, the Chinese possessed firms offer great remuneration bundles and additionally contending firms are starting to enter the Chinese market. Proceed with the preparation from ECL University which will exhibit the ECL culture while acculturating it to ECL China and is a framework that whenever oversaw appropriately it will work and will give the ideal outcomes. In the event that this move isn't made, individuals would think little of the need of progress. In the subsequent advance, the hierarchical pioneers need to build up a group which encourages picking up of peopleââ¬â¢s assent for change usage. On the off chance that this move isn't made, substantially more exertion would be required to persuade people since they would be dissipated and not individuals from a similar gr oup. On the off chance that this move isn't made, there would not be consistency of approach because of absence of data in specific supporters. In the fifth step, the pioneer needs to perceive the hindrances in the method of execution of progress and do whatever is required to evacuate them. On the off chance that this move isn't made, the change procedure is probably going to be hindered en route. In the 6th step, the pioneer ought to acknowledge along with the supporters the accomplishment of go-between objectives. In the seventh step, the pioneer ought to underscore upon a requirement for the adherents to keep working a similar way with the goal that the accomplishment of primer objectives prompts the achievement of a definitive objective. In the eighth step, the supporters should be spurred to continually survey the change procedure and continue adjusting it to achieve ideal outcomes. On the off chance that this move isn't made, the change may not bring the ideal outcomes. Every one of the eight stages remembered for the Kotterââ¬â¢s model is basically an activity that requires a total system to be taken viably. Usage of progress and its administration as proposed by Kotter requires sound administration aptitudes in a person. As a chief, I have great rhetoric aptitudes and in this way, can persuade individuals or for the least, present my feeling in a c omprehensible way. I am acceptable at taking activities relating to all the means of Kotterââ¬â¢s eight stage model for the most part. In any case, I need a little improvement in the fourth, seventh and eighth step. This is a result of the way that I am somewhat indiscreet because of which, I probably won't have the option to ensure that the procedure of progress is conveyed to the entirety of the authoritative work force. This requires a touch of association on my part. I think that its hard to recall myself if the congruity in a procedure is broken. So after the 6th step, wherein I as a chief would commend fundamental objectives with the hierarchical staff, it may be hard for me to build up the concentrate again to ensure that

Itâs the hiring managers way of getting to know you and to understand why you are sitting in front of them. The best answerThe best answer is short and story-like. You donât want to keep blabbering on for minutes â" five minutes is a good maximum amount of time to spend on this.Construct the answer in a story-like format; go back to your past and highlight when you became interested in the industry youâre applying for.You can then highlight your achievements that relate to the job in question. Always build the answer around the qualities of character needed for the role.âIâm a southern girl who first dabbled in sales at the age of seven when I launched a lemonade stand at the front garden. For the past five years, Iâve been working a sales assistant. Iâd describe myself as a person with a versatile skill set, a strong work ethic and willingness to help customers feel satisfied by the end of the interaction. Right now, Iâm looking to boost my career progress and thatâs why Iâve applied for the role of sales executive. My ambition is really pushing me towards a role where I can help others improve their sales skills and to work directly with customers.âWHY SHOULD WE HIRE YOU?This is another extremely common question and one thatâs rather difficult to answer. Itâs easy to get this wrong and state something obvious like âIâm qu alifiedâ.You need to show your understanding of the requirements of the role and what the companyâs vision and values are about. Itâs the hiring managerâs way of testing if you know what they want. The best answerYou definitely want to rely on the elevator pitch answer here. The elevator pitch is a short one to two-minute sales pitch that highlights your personal unique selling point (USP) and your value to the organization.Focus on your strengths as a candidate, especially in terms of what sets you apart from everyone else.Make sure you highlight your passion for the industry but also the company you are interviewing with.âYou describe in the job listing that youâre looking for a sales executive with great management skills. In my 10 years of working in the sales industry, Iâve dealt with teams small and big. Iâve developed strong motivational skills and been rewarded with the manager-of-the-year award for my innovative strategies. I can push employees to go the extr a mile and I will bring these strategies here to push the company further if selected for the role.âWHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST WEAKNESS?The interviewer is looking to learn even more about you and to check if you are able to self-reflect.The modern employer doesnât want people who canât take criticism or who arenât willing to develop, not just in terms of hard skills but also soft skills. The question is a way of testing if you can examine your actions and behaviors critically. The best answerYou donât want to draw too much attention to a big negative trait with your answer. But at the same time, you shouldnât avoid answering the question. There is nothing more unprofessional than claiming you have no weaknesses. In addition, you definitely want to keep the weakness professional â" drinking too much is not a quality you want to highlight in a job interview.Pick a quality thatâs more of a frustration and which isnât required for the job. If you are applying to be a baker, then you might pick something like not being very technology-knowledgeable.Itâs also clever to point out how you are trying to improve this weakness and ensure it isnât a problem in your worklife. With the example in mind, you could say youâre now attending an IT course to rectify the situation.âI sometimes have a habit of spending more time than needed on a task that I could easily delegate to someone else. While Iâve never missed a deadline, Iâm still making an effort to schedule better and to know which tasks I can assign to others.âWHY ARE YOU LEAVING YOUR CURRENT JOB?Employers want to understand why people move from one job to another because it can help them identify how long they can expect you to stay.Itâs not cheap to keep recruiting employees and your answer might reveal a problem in your ability to stay put (along with a patchy resume, for example). The question is to identify your personality, your career objectives and your ambition. This definitely isnât a qu estion calling for full honesty â" the real reason might actually make the interviewer think twice. The best answerYour answer should always show your current employer in a good light, even if you are leaving out of something negative. You donât want to talk bad about your previous employers because it doesnât look professional and it could make the hiring manager doubt your loyalty and commitment as an employee.A much better way of dealing with the questions is to make the answer focus on your career objectives and ambitions.Saying you needed a fresh challenge or youâre looking to push upwards in the career ladder is a good idea. It shows ambition and it doesnât reveal any conflict.âIâm looking for bigger challenges in my career at the moment and I feel like I didnât have them at my workplace. Iâve been looking to change the direction of my career slightly and the current employer just doesnât have opportunities in those areas.âHOW DO YOU RESPOND TO CRITICISM?The workplace is not a place where things always go smoothly and everyone just has nice things to say about each other. With this question, the interviewer is testing if you understand the place of criticism in the workplace and if you are able to learn from it.Itâs not as much about responding to criticism as it is about knowing why people critique others in the first place. The best answerA good answer will acknowledge the importance of criticism. You want to let the hiring manager know you understand it is part of life and highlight your ability to take it as a personal development tool. It shows maturity and professionalism. You should also talk about your coping mechanism in a form of a strategy.Outline your steps after you encounter criticism and emphasize your focus on learning from mistakes and the feedback.âI understand criticism is part of life and I always welcome constructive criticism. I can be rather critical of my own work and therefore, I appreciate when I receive feed back from others. I was recently told to work a draft document for a new client and I felt a little uneasy, as Iâm not generally meant to do this as part of my job. Therefore, I sought advice throughout and actually welcomed critique. Although my manager was happy with the work, I also received a lot of advice on how to improve the document. I feel the experience taught me a lot about writing but also about being able to overcome your fear and just try new things.âARE YOU A TEAM PLAYER?This might sound like a simple question to answer compared to some of the others on the list. But itâs actually not a clear-cut âyesâ or ânoâ question. It tests your knowledge about the role and the kinds of team structures in place in the organization. The interviewer asks it in order to get your views on leadership and to see if you are able to work in a team or to lead on.The best answerYou should give a concrete example of a situation where you showed your ability to be a team player, r ather than say âyesâ.The example doesnât necessarily have to be from work â" it could be something you did as part of your student life, for example. The important thing is to build your answer around an example and align it with the requirements of the role. So, if the job youâre applying for is a team project type of role, give an example of how youâve handled something similar in the past.On the other hand, if itâs close to an individual role, you want to highlight how youâre able to be your own boss but also step out of this role and help your teammates.âI believe working in a team is both beneficial and challenging. When I was part of the football club, I learned a lot about communication and problem-solving. You wanted to make things work and come up with compromises because it meant the experience was more enjoyable. Of course, it was also challenging because people can have different ways of getting their point across and often your own ways of doing things ar e challenged. But I definitely enjoy both being part of a team and leading one.âWHO HAS BEEN YOUR BEST AND WORST BOSS?This is a tricky question to answer because the interviewer is testing two things.First, they want to know if you understand what makes someone a good or a bad leader. But they also want to know what kind of person you are to work with â" do you run and badmouth your colleagues as soon as you get the opportunity? The best answerJust like you shouldnât badmouth a previous employer when asked about your reasons for leaving, you donât ever want to name names when it comes to your favorite and least favorite bosses.A good answer is not about personalities but more about characters. You donât need to give an actual example of the boss here. You can just talk about bosses as collective â" state how the bosses have been showing specific characteristics. Thereâs a good video below on what makes a leader good: Now, when you are talking about the worst boss, donât m ention personal reasons.Again, you want to talk about leadership qualities and how perhaps some people have lacked those â" for example, the bosses have not always been good at communicating the objectives, which you think is important for a good leader.âI can honestly say Iâve learned from every boss Iâve had. My best bosses have been those whoâve allowed me to take more responsibility as Iâve developed in my jobs. Iâve had others with a more hands-on management style but I feel Iâve flourished under the ones whoâve let me have more responsibility.âDO YOU HAVE ANY REGRETS?The interviewer will also want to dig deeper into your past.Again, the question is about self-reflection and your ability to identify past mistakes. This can be a question to learn more about yourself but the interviewer might also be checking if you want to clarify gaps or issues in your resume â" for example, that you regret travelling around the world even though it taught you a lot of things .The best answerYou have two options in terms of answering the question. You could go down the personal route and talk about how you wished youâd spent more times with your nephews or your gran who could have taught you more about life. You could also keep it non-personal and state things like you wish youâd studied harder in high school so that you didnât have as much catching up in college. The key is to not just state regret with your answer but to highlight the power of learning from the past. You want to say that even though you might do things differently now, youâve still learned from the mistake and used it as an opportunity to become a better worker or person.âAlthough Iâm overall happy with my life, the one aspect I likely would have changed would have been focusing on this career path earlier. Iâve really enjoyed working in the field and I wish I had taken more time at university to really focus on my professional development. However, I feel like my passion is pushing me forward and Iâve quickly gained experience.âHOW MUCH DO YOU WANT TO BE PAID?Itâs rather likely the interviewer will bring up money and this can be a tricky situation. If you ask too much, you might be excluded from the role and if you ask too little, you might end up with a low salary â" the employers always remember!Talking about money is never easy but itâs important to prepare for this question. The best answerYou donât want to throw out a number at this point. The actual salary negotiations should take place later and you might find your answer bite you in the end.Itâs important to conduct research prior to giving your answer â" you want to have an idea of the industry standard for that specific role. Consider using a bracket around industry averages.âWell, according to my research on the industry, the average is between $50k to $80k and I believe my skills and competencies fall along this range. Iâm just interested in finding a challenging role that fits my qualifications and Iâm confident you can offer a competitive salary.âTOP TIPS FOR ANSWERING TOUGH INTERVIEW QUESTIONSThe above are the most difficult questions you have to answer during your job interview. In order to prepare for them and to other job interview questions, here are three golden rules to keep in mind.Prepare for all sorts of questionsBe prepared for anything. While there are common interview questions most hiring managers ask, each hiring manager, role and company are different. They can have their own interview style and you can get a question youâve never seen mentioned in any guide â" so be prepared.Research the company well. Understand what the company is looking for by deciphering the job posting and examining the company website for more information. Know the industry and the key trends shaping it.Understand your own strengths especially in terms of the role. Think about different examples in your life that showcase your suitability for the role.I n order to calm the nerves and to get familiar answering questions, get your friend to interview you. Practicing the interview situation like this can be extremely helpful.Take your timeWhen you do hear the question, donât rush to your answer. Always take a deep breath before you start and compose the start of your answer before you begin talking.Keep your answer short and sweet and donât try to talk like a machine gun.Remember to ask for clarification if you need it. You can even ask the interviewer to repeat the question if you want a bit more time to think your answers.Donât fret a bad answerNow, no matter how much you prepare for the job interview, you never know what might happen. Sometimes your answer just might not come out the way you want and you can feel like youâve ruined it. Do not panic if this happens.Itâs often possible to return to things youâve said during the interview right at the end of it.The interviewer will often give you an opportunity to ask ques tions or to go over any unclear things â" you can use this as an opportunity to return to an answer. For example, you could say something like âI just wanted to go back to when you asked me about my weaknesses. I thinkâ¦â.So, when youâve given an answer and you feel it wasnât quite as good as you wanted but the interviewer is moving onwards, just breathe. Calm down and focus on the next question â" return to the issue later if you feel like itâs still bothering you.Donât forget you can also get back to things in the follow-up note you should send after the interview. Itâs a great opportunity to get back to anything that took place during the interview and for you to rectify the situation.

Schools With The Most Study-Abroad Options by: Naomi Nishihara on December 22, 2016 | 0 Comments Comments 699 Views December 22, 2016The Carlson Entrepreneurship in Cuba class, March 2016. Courtesy photoIs being away from college the best part of college? Maybe, if youââ¬â¢re studying abroad. More and more these days, international experience can help you get a job. And top business schools in America are bending over backward to make sure their students have lots of study-abroad options. For students who donââ¬â¢t want to lose an entire semester, many schools offer business-specific study-abroad programs, where studentà can get class credit or even complete business internships. Other schools have classes that are taught on campus, but include an international trip at some point in the semester. And still others offer year-long programs that allow students to complete a large portion of their degree abroad. Northeastern, for example, has hundreds of business-specific stu dy-abroad programs, ranging from five weeks to two years.ââ¬Å"I spent two years living, studying, and working abroad in Spain,â⬠says one student from the Northeastern Class of 2014. ââ¬Å"It was an incredible experience that taught me first-hand how business is conducted abroad, the cultural nuances to be truly culturally agile, and (offered) complete immersion to achieve fluency in Spanish. In a survey conducted by PoetsQuants, we asked top business schools to tell us about their global classes and programs. Below are some of the schools with the highest number of opportunities.100% OF CARLSON GRADUATES HAVE A GLOBAL EXPERIENCE Before they graduate, 100% of undergraduates at the University of Minnesotas Carlson School of Management have a global experienceà à two or more weeks of international study. In 2008, the Carlson School became one of the first U.S. business schools to require that all students have an international experience. Anne Dââ¬â¢Angelo, assistant dean of global initiatives, says firms in the Twin Cities and beyond are demanding that the graduates they hire beà adept in thinking internationally. ââ¬Å"Successful entrepreneurs must consider their place in the global economy from day one,â⬠DAngeloà says. ââ¬Å"The most effective government and nonprofit leaders are at the forefront of global and cross-cultural engagement. The capabilities to be effective in this new order are honed through experiential opportunities, through courses and programs that take students out of the classroom and out of their comfort zones. Education abroad does exactly that.â⬠In fact, DAngeloà says that research conducted by the Carlson School has shown that students who participate in education abroad are better able to deal with uncertainty, interact with people from unfamiliar cultures, navigate ambiguity, accept cultural norms and values different from their own, and understand U.S. business and economics in a broad context.à On average, sheà says, betweenà 35% and 40% of Carlson students spend a semester abroad; the remaining 60% to 65% participate in a shorter summer program abroad, or a domestic course that goes overseas for two or more weeks. To help students afford the required travel, Kim Turner-Rush, assistant dean of the undergraduate program, says the Carlson Global Institute offers need-based and merit-based scholarships. Some are awarded to incoming freshmen, so they can use it at any time once they choose a study-abroad program. Others are awarded as students apply to the programs.FORDHAM HAS THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF GLOBAL BUSINESS COURSESThe school with the highest number of classes with a significant global component is Fordhamââ¬â¢s Gabelli School of Business in New York, with 42 classes where at least one third of the coursework concerns global business. ââ¬Å"I am surprised and also not surprised,â⬠says Hanaa Fawzy, assistant dean of global partnerships and initiatives at the Gab elli School. ââ¬Å"One of the four best practices of the school is globalization. Our dean has been very committed to globalization, and it is evident in the expertise of the faculty and the integration of curriculum with global content. There is a focus on international study at all levels: in our degree programs as well as the delivery of individual courses to our students.â⬠Gabellisà global business courses range from classes taken during semester-long study-abroad trips, to classes taught at the Fordham Center in London, to thoseà taught on campus that include trips abroad over spring break.Just this year, the Gabelli School introduced a new course in Singapore. ââ¬Å"The professor is originally from Singapore, and heââ¬â¢ll teach an upper-level management course about innovation and entrepreneurship, and how to convert an innovative idea into a successful and profitable business,â⬠Fawzy says. ââ¬Å"The students will meet here for lectures, then travel to Si ngapore during spring break.â⬠Some of the most popular global business courses are Global Marketing and International Business Ethics, Fawzy says. The Gabelli School also has special programs for students who are particularly interested in global business: the Global Business Honors Program, which offers the top 20-25 students in each class higher-level coursework and three international trips. Students can also major in Global Business, and can live in the Integrated Learning Community for Global Business ââ¬â a live-and-learn program for sophomores in Oââ¬â¢Hare Hall, a dorm on campus.ââ¬Å"It really opens up their eyes to be more successful business people who are more compassionate, understand cultural differences, and gain the soft skills that are crucial to succeed in multinational forms,â⬠Fawzyà says. ââ¬Å"At the end of the day, in order to be a successful businessperson, you have to understand different cultures and the effect of global economy. You can ââ¬â¢t say that business is not global.â⬠MANY SCHOOLS HAVE HUNDREDS OF BUSINESS CLASSES ABROAD Fordham has a high number of business-specific study-abroad courses ââ¬â 72 to be exact, which doesnt set the Gabelli School too far apart from its peers:à Many B-schools have similarly high numbers of study-abroad programs, where students take pre-approved classes for credit toward their majors. In fact, Gabelli is nowhere near the top for most offerings: The Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst has a whopping 232 business classes abroad.Linda Shea, associate dean of the Isenberg School, says the classes range from Spanish immersion and classes about international stock exchanges to core courses and higher level seminars. Isenberg students also participate in internship programs abroad and exchange programs with other universities. Isenberg faculty also have developed and led specialized study-abroad experiences, like Conflict Resolution i n Ireland, Ubuntu Business in South Africa (after the philosophy of human kindness that came to international popularityà duringà the presidency of Nelson Mandela), and Human Resource Management and Labor Relations in China. A new program, also in South Africa, allows students to establish computer labs by providing used laptops and training in leadership, technology, and math at the Timbavati Foundation in Kruger National Park. This March, Shea says, students will bring enough laptops to establish three additional computer labs in three high schools. Each year, Shea says,à betweenà 10% and 20% of Isenberg students participate in international exchanges, internships, or study-abroad programs around the globe. Internationalà programming like this isà one of the most exciting and rewarding co-curricular options students have, she adds. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Civil War Battle of Spotsylvania
Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Conflict Dates: The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House was fought May 8-21, 1864, and was part of the American Civil War. Armies Commanders at Spotsylvania Court House: Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. GrantMajor General George G. Meadeapprox. 100,000 men Confederate General Robert E. Leeapprox. 52,000 men Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Background: Following the bloody stalemate at the Battle of the Wilderness (May 5-7, 1864), Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant elected to disengage, but unlike his predecessors, he decided to keep pressing south. Shifting bulk of the Army of the Potomacs strength to the east, he began moving around the right flank of General Robert E. Lees Army of Northern Virginia on the night of May 7. The next day, Grant directed Major General Gouverneur K. Warrens V Corps to capture Spotsylvania Court House, approximately 10 miles to the southeast. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Sedgwick Killed: Anticipating Grants move, Lee rushed Major General J.E.B. Stuarts cavalry and Major General Richard Andersons First Corps to the area. Utilizing interior lines and taking advantage of Warrens tardiness, the Confederates were able to assume a position north of Spotsylvania before Union troops could arrive. Quickly building several miles of trenches, the Confederates were soon in a formidable defensive position. On May 9, as the bulk of Grants army arrived on the scene, Major General John Sedgwick, commander of the VI Corps, was killed as he scouted the Confederate lines. Replacing Sedgwick with Major General Horatio Wright, Grant began to develop plans for assaulting Lees army. Forming a ragged, inverted V, the Confederate lines were weakest near the tip in an area known as the Mule Shoe Salient. At 4:00 PM on May 10, the first Union attacks moved forward as Warrens men assaulted Andersons corps along the left side of the Confederate position. Repulsed with around 3,000 casualties, the attack was the precursor for another assault which slammed into the east side of the Mule Shoe two hours later. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Uptons Attack: Assembling twelve regiments from the VI Corps, Colonel Emory Upton formed them in a tight assault column three wide by four deep. Striking a narrow front along the Mule Shoe, his new approach quickly breached the Confederate lines and opened a narrow but deep penetration. Battling valiantly, Uptons men were forced to withdraw when reinforcements to exploit the breach failed to arrive. Recognizing the brilliance of Uptons tactics, Grant immediately promoted him to brigadier general and began planning corps-size assault using the same approach. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Assaulting the Mule Shoe: Taking May 11 to plan and shift troops for the pending assault, Grants army was quiet for most of the day. Misinterpreting the Union inactivity as a sign that Grant was going to attempt moving by his army, Lee removed artillery from the Mule Shoe in preparation for shifting to a new position. Shortly before dawn on May 12, Major General Winfield S. Hancocks veteran II Corps struck top of the Mule Shoe using Uptons tactics. Quickly overwhelming Major General Edward Allegheny Johnsons division, Hancocks men captured 4,000 prisoners along with their commander. Rolling through the Mule Shoe, the Union advance bogged down as Brigadier General John B. Gordon shifted three brigades to block Hancocks men. Also hampered by the lack of a follow-up wave to press the attack, Hancocks troops were soon being pushed back. To regain the momentum, Grant ordered Major General Ambrose Burnsides IX Corps to attack from east. While Burnside had some initial success, his assaults were contained and defeated. Around 6:00 AM, Grant sent Wrights VI Corps into the Mule Shoe to fight on Hancocks right. Raging through the day and into the night, fighting in the Mule Shoe surged back and forth as each side sought an advantage. With heavy casualties on both sides, the landscape was quickly reduced to a body-strewn wasteland that presaged the battlefields of World War I. Recognizing the critical nature of the situation, Lee repeatedly sought to personally lead his men forward, but was prevented from doing so by his troops who desired to preserve his safety. Some of the most intense combat occurred at an area of the salient known as the Bloody Angle where sides were sometimes reduced to hand-to-hand fighting. As the fighting raged, Confederate troops built a defensive line across the base of the salient. Completed around 3:00 AM on May 13, Lee ordered his troops to abandon the salient and retire into the new line. Occupying the salient, Grant paused for five days as he probed east and south seeking a weak spot in the Confederate lines. Unable to find one, he sought to surprise the Confederates at the Mule Shoe line on May 18. Moving forward, Hancocks men were repulsed and Grant soon cancelled the effort. Realizing that a breakthrough would not be possible at Spotsylvania, Grant continued his trend of moving left and again slipped around Lees army by marching south towards Guinea Station on May 20. Battle of Spotsylvania Court House - Aftermath: The fighting at Spotsylvania Court House cost Grant 2,725 killed, 13,416 wounded, and 2,258 captured/missing, while Lee suffered 1,467 killed, 6,235 wounded, and 5,719 captured/missing. The second contest between Grant and Lee, Spotsylvania effectively ended in a stalemate. Unable to win a decisive victory over Lee, Grant continued the Overland Campaign by pressing south. Though desiring a war-winning triumph, Grant was aware that each battle cost Lee casualties that the Confederates could not replace.
